The Wortman Oil Company building was originally built in 1913 and was the Triangle Lumber and Hardware Company. In 1926 the hardware company moved from the area to it's present day location. Mr. Wortman's father, Frank Wortman, and Mr. Dee Hurps bought the building and opened Wortman's Super Service in 1921. Frank Wortman was the bookkeeper and Mr. Hurps was the mechanic. Sadly, the partnership came to a sad ending. Mr. Hurps was drowned in Lake Van in 1933.
Bud Wortman and his new bride Rosemary returned to Dexter on December 31, 1953, after Mr. Wortman completed a tour of duty with Uncle Sam. Mr. Wortman recalled that Dexter had 5 service stations, four grocery stores, two doctors, three barber shops , two bars, a clothing store, a hotel, a laundry mat, and a mercantile store.
Mr. Wortman ran the station until 1976. He continued with his delivery service until 1997 0r 1998. He closed the station part of the business because the gasoline business slowed down, he lacked appropriate labor, and his farm became a higher priority.
Mr. and Mrs. Wortman raised two boys on their family farms and continue to live on the family farm. He stated, " I still hate to go to Allsup's and see a lady have to put gas in her own car."
