Hello Parents and Students,
My name is Chanda Crandall, and I will be teaching your student English Language Arts for the 10th grade. During the course of the year your student will be expected to meet proficiency in the Common Core Standards for Language Arts
http://newmexicocommoncore.org/. At this web address, you can find many helpful resources that explain the learning standards for your student. It is a very parent and student friendly site.
The first semester will require your student to master 24 standards by completing various summative assessments. Summative Assessments are your big tests. In preparation for the "Big Tests", your student will practice the standards many times through formative assessments. Formative Assessments are daily practices, homework, readings, or quizzes that your student will do in preparation for the Summative Assessment. The first nine weeks, I will record around 5 summative grades for your student plus a mid-term exam. The second nine weeks I will record around 5 summative grades and semester exam. The second semester will follow this format.
It is an expectation for your student to read 3 out-of-class novels over each semester and a total of 6 for the year. For class, your student will be reading 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens,The Last Lecture,Night, The Epic: The Odyssey,The Drama:Julius Caesar, a variety of short stories, articles, and poems. Each book your student reads will be digitally recorded in our AR database, so you as a parent may see which books he or she has read as well as how he or she did on a reading test over the book.
In addition to reading, your student will be writing research-based argument/persuasive, compare and contrast, expository and informational essays throughout the course of each semester. Each essay will be assigned with a rubric, which details the standards and learning expectations for the assignment to reach proficiency or above.
For class your student will need the following supplies: 1 2" Three ringed binder, 1 Composting notebook, 1 pack of 8 Crayola fine-tip markers, Loose-leaf paper for his or her 3-ringed binder, a Jump Drive, and pencils or pens.
I look forward to our partnership over the next year for educating your student. Below, I have listed my email address and room number, so you can reach me.
