Letter Jacket Program

High School Letter Jacket Program

Students at Dexter High School have the opportunity to become actively involved in various school organizations and extracurricular activities.  School organizations and extracurricular activities are non-discriminatory, are governed by eligibility requirements, and ALL students are encouraged to participate.  An activity letter can be earned through involvement in each of the organizations.

Students at Dexter High School are encouraged to participate in a community service program to receive a free standard letter jacket.  Community service will be performed outside of the regular school day.  Upon completion of the community service program and receipt of an academic/athletic/activity letter, students will be given a voucher to present to a vendor to cover the cost of a standard letter jacket (jacket with name embroidered on back).  Any additional costs for added features, patches, or different jacket styles will be at the expense of the student.

Dexter High School Academic/Athletic/Activity Letter Jacket Program guidelines follow:

  • Students perform 20 hours of approved community service hours to earn a letter jacket (recording form and information available in the High School Office).  Students can begin community service to earn the jacket before earning a letter.  However, they cannot obtain the jacket until the letter is earned.  Students can earn a letter in the following manner.

    • Athletic Letter—The athletic director and coaches will set up the requirements for students to earn a letter in their chosen sport(s)

    • Scholarship Letter – Students who maintain a 3.430 GPA or above average with no grade below a 2.0 GPA each grading period throughout the year will be awarded a letter in Scholarship.

    • Organization Letter—Students enrolled in nationally recognized organizations where there is a chance to earn state or national recognition are eligible to receive a letter.  The activities director and sponsors will set up the requirements for students to earn a letter in their organization.  The following organizations’ prerequisite is that students must be enrolled in one of its corresponding courses:  FFA, BPA, FCCLA, or Skills USA.  Currently, the organizations in Dexter High School that meet this requirement are:

      • BPA

      • FCCLA

      • FFA

      • Skills USA

    • Clubs that might not have national recognition, but do provide opportunities for state or national competitions are also included. The activities director and sponsors will set up the requirements for students to earn a letter in their club. These include, but are not limited to:

      • Band

      • Choir

      • Folklorico/Spanish Club

      • National Honor Society

      • Student Council

Students will receive one actual letter (D) for their jackets.  Bars/pins that distinguish each group will be given after the letter is earned.
